Preventive Maintenance Protects the Department

Scheduled preventative maintenance (PM) is an effective tool for all fire department fleet maintenance operations. A routine and well thought out PM program reduces apparatus downtime, service calls and breakdowns. It also reduces mechanic overtime and minimizes lost crew hours. Safe and dependable apparatus performance is reflected in the services provided to the fire crews. All in all a good PM program results in good fleet and line relations.
You can also enhance risk management with your PM program. A well maintained fire truck is a safer vehicle for the passengers as well as the community at large. In addition to safety, the documentation included as a proactive PM program can be invaluable in the courtroom. In the lawsuit-happy age we live in today, a department can never be too careful when it comes to mechanical work to keep trucks up to NFPA standards. If legal action is taken from an accident that harms a firefighter, the department will more than likely be required by law to provide that the program’s documentation meets or exceeds the department’s standard operating procedure and a number of NFPA standards- the NFPA 1911 standard for inspection, maintenance, testing and retirement of in-service apparatus, the NFPA 1071 standard for emergency vehicle technician professional qualifications and the NFPA 1002 standard for apparatus driver qualifications. In addition, the department will have to show compliance with apparatus component manufactures’ recommendations and restrictions’, as well as compliance with federal, state, and local regulations’. Having documentation of scheduled and completed maintenance protects the department and the community.

Remember, if it is not documented, it did not happen. All the fleet maintenance departments’ records, including work orders, check sheets and inspection forms are legal documents that dictate the performance and outcome in the courtroom. If a department’s vehicle maintenance records are incomplete or nonexistent, there is little chance for the local government to successfully defend itself in court. Atlantic Coast Fire Trucks can protect your department with our service center and mobile service vehicles.

Atlantic Coast Fire Trucks is your one-stop maintenance provider, from Preventative Maintenance to major overhauls. We have the capability to service your fleet vehicles at your location and get you back into service to answer emergency calls.

Taking care of your truck is our number one mission. When a truck receives a complete service, each pumper goes through a full 178 point inspection and Aerials will receive a 254 point inspection. Following the inspection our technicians will sit down and go over all noted deficiencies found during the inspection along with associated repair costs.
